Provence

Here is a little study of a door in Provence, France. The goal here was to create texture without becoming too painterly, therefore using black and sepia inks in addition to watercolour to try and achieve that.

Summer Plein Air

Every year September rolls around and I go “What? Already?!”. This summer was a good one for plein air drawing, even though Joel and I always feel like we could do more. Plus, he just bought me the artist-quality Winsor-Newton compact watercolour set for my birthday and I haven’t tried it out yet!

The following drawings were done in and around the Westport, ON area and on our Pacific Northwest road trip.allanmill_web vistahouse_web gypsy_web perth_web

Molting

I’m digging back into the archives to finally post this piece that was created for the Nook Collective Holiday Show. The criteria was only that the piece had to be circular, everything else was up to the artist. My piece reflects on the metamorphosis idea often found in Celtic mythology, where one will “shed one’s skin”, hence the title Molting.

Ink, watercolour & coloured pencil, 11″ diameter. Antique frame with antlers made of Sculpey and painted in acrylics.

Hand drawn cards

Sometimes I think it’s funny that I started a greeting card company because I basically have never bought a greeting card in my life: I have always drawn or made them by hand, which I suppose makes sense. Some of my friends and family are fortunate enough to get an original hand drawn cards (I hope they think so too!).

Here is a selection of illustrated cards:

This card is a French language play on words. I wanted to congratulate my friend on becoming a lawyer, and the French word for lawyer is “avocat”, which also mean “avocado”. Hence, an avocado in a party hat. Done in ink and pencil crayon.

We dogsat my friend’s dog over the winter while her family wintered in Mexico. This is a birthday card featuring an illustration of her dog in a Mexican sombrero.

This is a simple “raising a cup” to my friend for graduating from law school.
